WASHINGTON— LA PLATA, Maryland — The US Space Force has begun letting three-month pilot contracts for its Commercial Augmentation Space Reserve (CASR) for real-world testing of how to bring commercial space capacity more fully into US military operations.
But the first pilots focus on space domain awareness, a field that bears little relation to satellite telecommunications or Earth observation and is unlikely to address many of the challenges that will need to be resolved to bring these larger categories into CASR, according to government and industry officials.
