US regulator OKs AST SpaceMobile’s first 5 commercial satellites, but not yet for satellite-to-cell service

TUPPER LAKE, NY — The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC)  allowed startup satellite-to-smartphone constellation operator AST SpaceMobile to test its first five satellites for specific operations in V-, S- and UHF-band frequencies.

The S-band authorization is for satellite links only to Earth stations outside the United States.

But the agency stressed in its Aug. 2 decision  that the initial approval does not allow AST to conduct its intended business — using terrestrial network operators’ spectrum to provide broadband to unserved areas. That . . .
