Thaicom: We need software-defined satellites to compete with mega-constellations, but price/schedule is a problem

SINGAPORE —Regional Asian satellite fleet operators said it still takes far too long for telecommunications satellites to be delivered — three years or so after contract — and that they consider purchasing any assets made available as part of the purchase of Intelsat by SES.

SES’s purchase of Intelsat has been approved by both companies’ boards but must navigate what SES said could be 18 months of regulatory review. It’s possible that full approval would mean divesting several of the combined companies’ 100-plus satellite fleet in geostationary orbit.
