Thai satcom regulator confronts possibility that only Thaicom is interested in orbital-slot auction

CUNCY-LES-VARZY, France— It should have been no surprise to Thai telecom regulators that the only company showing up for a satellite orbital-slot auction was incumbent fleet operator Thaicom.

Given the government’s experience with Thaicom, it would have been newsworthy if any other group had been willing to pay to receive the same treatment, especially given the state of satellite bandwidth prices in general, and the competitive environment in Southeast Asia in particular.

Thaicom is facing the end of its 30-year operating license . . .
