PARIS — The government of Norway, which already operates small maritime-surveillance satellites equipped with Automatic Information System (AIS) receivers to track ships, is now moving into wide-swath, medium-resolution radar with the purchase of the first of several synthetic-aperture radar (SAR) satellites.
But unlike the AIS program, the MicroSAR business is intended to provide commercial service worldwide, taking advantage of what Space Norway sees as a gap in today’s commercial offers. Satellite ground station network operator Kongsberg Satellite Services (KSat) will be in charge of commercial sales.
