LA PLATA, Maryland — Ligado Networks has declared its SkyTerra 1 L-band mobile communications satellite a total loss and filed a $175 million insurance claim, according to industry officials.
The satellite, a Boeing GEO-Mobile BSS 702 model, was launched in late 2010 and now operates from 101.3 degrees west in geostationary orbit. Its identifying feature is its 22-meter-diameter unfurlable mesh antenna, built by L3 Harris, which had difficulty deploying early on and is now the principal cause of the claim, officials . . .
