LA PLATA, Maryland— Mobile satellite services operator Iridium Communications Inc. said it’s on track to begin commercial operation of a direct-to-device service in 2026 after live testing with at least one handset supplier starting this summer.
The company remains convinced that its globally licensed L-band spectrum and its existing satellite constellation, which still has years of service life remaining, will appeal to mobile network operators, even those that sign on with regional D2D services from SpaceX’s Starlink, AST SpaceMobile and others.
