LA PLATA, Maryland — Eutelsat’s plan to reduce the cost of its OneWeb Gen 2 broadband satellite constellation by piggybacking on the European Commission’s Iris2 secure connectivity project looks less likely with SES’s all-cash purchase of Intelsat and the multiple issues confronting Iris2.
SES’s agreement to spend $3.1 billion on Intelsat makes it more difficult for the company to invest heavily in Iris2, designed as a public-private partnership with the Commission in which industry would be the major investor . . .
