LA PLATA, Maryland — For startup designers of high-altitude platforms (HAPS) for Earth observation and telecommunications, 2025 looks to be the year when they move from proof-of-concept and early fundraising to commercial debut.
Airbus’s Aalto HAPS Ltd., Sceye, Skydweller Aero Inc. and Stratospheric Platforms are pursuing very different platform designs. Unsurprisingly, they appear to be converging on governments as an indispensable early market for intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance missions as well as local-area telecommunications and positioning, navigation and timing.
