German military ready to ride budget wave with LEO broadband, reconnaissance constellations

FRANKFURT — The German armed forces are preparing a major new investment in dual-use and dedicated military space capacity whose credibility has increased sharply since the government’s recent budget decisions.

In addition to expanding its satellite telecommunications capability with assets in GEO, MEO and LEO orbit — including the use of the European Commission’s Iris2 secure multi-orbit network — the Bundeswehr expects to add new intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance capacity.
