Eutelsat hires Airbus to build 100 OneWeb satellites, built in France, to cover gap between OneWeb Gen 1 and Iris2

LA PLATA, Maryland — Satellite fleet operator Eutelsat, just 24 hours after signing a 2-billion-euro ($2.1 billion) commitment to Europe’s Iris2 secure communications constellation, whose full contracting team has yet to be selected, has contracted with Airbus Defence and Space for 100 new OneWeb broadband satellites.

The satellites will all be built at Airbus’s Toulouse, France, facility, which is one way to facilitate the transition between today’s OneWeb and tomorrow’s 264-satellite Iris2 low-orbiting constellation.
