ESA to solicit Launcher Challenge bids in February while maintaining heavy investment in Ariane 6, Vega rockets

LA PLATA, Maryland — European Space Agency (ESA) governments approved preparation of ESA’s European Launcher Challenge (ELC), designed to bring competition into the selection of European government launchers. They also signed contracts showing how hard it will be for startups to enter this market.

Meeting Dec. 16-17 at its Paris headquarters, ESA’s ruling council gave legal endorsement for the agency to conduct all the preliminary work needed to present a full-fledged ELC package to ESA ministers at their November 2025 conference in Bremen, Germany.
