Arianespace & Avio spar with Spaceflight Inc. & SpaceX on launch cost vs price, and what customer flexibility means

PARIS — U.S. and European launch-service providers disagreed on the relationship between the cost of a launch and the price charged to customers, or whether there is such a relationship.

They also disagreed on whether small rockets necessarily offer more flexibility and schedule assurance than larger rockets.

Curt Blake, chief executive of Spaceflight Inc., whose Sherpa tugs and other launch-aggregation services have made it a customer for multiple launch vehicles, said reusable rocket hardware “is probably the primary driver of launch costs coming down . . .
