PARIS — Airbus is placing a 75-kilogram, 330-watt laser optical communications terminal on the Airbus-built Arabsat Badr-8 satellite, to launch in 2023, in a key demonstration of the value of optical feeder links to the ground from high-throughput spacecraft.
The Teleo payload, designed by Airbus Defense and Space France, follows a study with the French space agency, CNES, showing that optical links are more cost-effective than radio-frequency connections for high-capacity spacecraft.
