LONDON — Airbus Defence and Space’s plans to build a global space-based laser communications infrastructure has been slowed by the lack of technical standards that would enable multinational use of the system and technical hurdles needed for in-orbit application of them.
As a result, Airbus’s goal of a near-global SpaceDataHighway network in place with three satellites in geostationary orbit by 2021 has been put on hold as the company works through the issues.
