UK MoD, making good on predecessor’s commitment, orders 2 radar sats from Airbus as part of $1.2B constellation

LA PLATA, Maryland — The UK Defence Ministry, making good on a pledge by the previous UK government to deploy a constellation of intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) satellites by 2031, signed a GBP 127 million ($145 million) contract with Airbus Defence and Space UK for two synthetic-aperture radar satellites to launch in 2027.

The two Oberon satellites, expected to weigh 400 kilograms each, will feature deployable carbon-fiber antennas built by Oxford Space Systems.
