ESA: GEO return is fundamental to us, but it can be made more flexible & less of a headwind for competitiveness

LA PLATA, Maryland — Despite criticism from a European Union report on European competitiveness and regular critiques from Europe’s largest space power, France, the European Space Agency (ESA) will not dismantle its geographic-return principle of contract awards but will render it simpler and more flexible.

That is the conclusion of a “Tiger team” of industry experts, ESA staff and ESA member governments, which presented its results to ESA’s ruling council Dec. 16-17, according to ESA Director-General Josef Aschbacher.
