18 months after selecting Lockheed Martin, Australian Defence Force cancels multibillion-dollar GEO-orbit-based procurement

BANGKOK — There are two ways to assess the Australian Defence Force (ADF) cancellation of the multibillion-dollar JP 9102 space procurement, starting with two large geostationary-orbit satellites from Lockheed Martin Australia, in favor of an undefined “multi-orbit strategy:”

It’s either a brave acknowledgement of advances in the technology and the threat environment, or a concession that ADF cannot afford its planned spending of 9-12 billion Australian dollars ($5.9-$7.9 billion) in autonomous space capacity and must find a less-costly solution.
