With 3GPP as a new friend, Iridium makes its D2D case against Starlink, T-Mobile, AST SpaceMobile et al

PARIS — Mobile satellite servies provider Iridium Communications said its Q3 financial results confirm that its L-band business in aeronautical, maritime and land-mobile markets is not threatened by Ka- and Ku-band mega-constellations including Starlink and the future Amazon Kuiper but will complement them.

Iridium had a brief moment when its maritime broadband play was growing quickly and some vessels made Iridium their primary broadband source. Then Starlink began taking that role away — faster and cheaper if not fully global — and Iridium’s broadband business declined.
