Japan, its 7-satellite QZSS navigation network still not deployed, plans complementary 240-satellite LEO service

TUPPER LAKE, NY — Japan has not yet completed deployment of its expanded seven-satellite Quasi-Zenith Satellite System (QZSS) navigation network in geostationary and inclined-geostationary orbit but is already designing a LEO version with 240 satellites and ultimately 480 satellites.

Japan's Jaxa, like agencies in the United States and Europe and several commercial companies, is looking to field a LEO network to offer backup and resiliency to the Global Navigation Satellite Systems (GNSS) constellations and regional positioning, navigation and timing (PNT) systems.
