With Ariane 6 success, can Europe take its eyes off launchers to focus on satellite sector? Maybe not quite yet

TUPPER LAKE, NY — It’s said that parents are never happier than their least-happy child. For well over a decade, the least-happy child for Europe’s space sector has been its heavy-lift launch program, first Ariane 5 and now Ariane 6.

The mainly successful July 9 inaugural flight of Ariane 6 is the start of solving that problem. The vehicle’s 29-launch order book and the promise of annual cash injections by European governments to stabilize the production ramp-up will also help.
