WASHINGTON — Qualcomm Inc. believes Android phones have lost market share to Apple’s iPhone because of Apple’s direct-to-cell agreement with mobile satellite operator Globalstar to provide SOS messages notwithstanding the Android community’s rejection of a joint Qualcomm-Iridium solution that would have provided a similar service.
Android device makers preferred to wait for a standards-based solution rather than adopt Iridium’s proprietary waveform and Qualcomm’s chipset, and both Iridium and Qualcomm are now working on 3GPP standards-bases solutions.
