LA PLATA, Maryland — Mobile satellite hardware and service provider Globalstar’s new chief executive gave a cautious view of the near-term potential of satellite direct-to-device service beyond emergency messaging, saying it’s unclear whether providing higher data throughput will be a profitable business.
Dr. Paul E. Jacobs, who arrived at Globalstar in late August and brought with him both colleagues and wireless-spectrum technology from his previous company, Xcom Labs, said it remains expensive to provide smartphone-level data rates from satellites.
