LAMPOLDSHAUSEN, Germany — Daniel Neuenschwander has spent much of his seven-year tenure as director of space transportation at the European Space Agency (ESA) trying to reconcile Europe’s need for proven rockets to launch government payloads with the bottom-up demand that startup launch vehicles be given access to ESA and other European government launch contracts.
It has not been easy going and the irony is that three unrelated pieces of bad news in 2022 have combined to get ESA closer to that goal.
