AT&T on its ‘sweat equity’ investment in AST SpaceMobile and why it prefers terrestrial spectrum for satellite-to-phone

WASHINGTON — AT&T’s head of networks detailed the company’s six years of in-kind support for startup satellite direct-to-device broadband provider AST SpaceMobile and said that its recent cash investment, while modest, was nonetheless a departure for such a conservative organization.

“We don’t do a lot of venture funding — very little at all, in fact,” said Chris Sambas, head of networks at AT&T and a self-described long-time believer in AST.
